STRIKING CARE WORKERS RALLY FOR FAIR PAY

Union warns councils not to scapegoat women workers for looming financial calamity
Councils must not scapegoat women workers for multi-million pound equal pay claims threatening to bankrupt them, according to GMB Scotland secretary Louise Gilmour.
She warned women fighting for fair pay must not be blamed for the financial calamity threatening to
engulf some local authorities.
Gilmour spoke out as home care workers striking across three council areas gathered in Glasgow to demand their pay reflects their roles and responsibilities.
The union warns most councils are still failing to engage with the claims for equal pay while unfairly suggesting the money should be spent on threatened services.
Gilmour said: “We know local authorities are struggling to make ends meet and we know why.
“But to suggest women workers are somehow making things worse by asking for money they are owed and, in many cases, have been owed for years is as dishonest as it is disgraceful.
“To blame equal pay claims instead of the systemic pay discrimination that has prevailed in our
councils is scapegoating workers only asking for what they are owed.
“It is an attempt to guilt women into believing they are being greedy and risking men’s jobs by simply asking for what they are due and have been due for years and years.
“The cost of settling equal pay issues is looming over Scotland’s local councils but is not about
women, it is about fairness and has been too long coming.”
Strikes involving the union’s members working in home care across Falkirk, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire Councils are underway this week.
GMB Scotland, representing relatively low-paid women across the public sector, has warned claims
totalling tens of millions of pounds will risk sinking local authorities without government
intervention.
Gilmour has written to first minister Humza Yousaf urging him to support the creation of a new specialist body to decide on pay discrimination claims across the country and enforce awards because local authorities are refusing to face reality.
Gilmour said: “Scotland’s councils are approaching equal pay claims like the Titanic approaching the iceberg.
“Councillors have their heads in the sand and executives have their fingers in their ears but these equal pay claims will come, will be won and will need to be settled.
“It is understandable that our councils are refusing to acknowledge the reality because the reality is unthinkable and the scale of these claims unimaginable for local authorities already being forced to cut services.
“Women who have been underpaid for far too long will still win these claims, however, and, unless that process is properly managed now, the impact on our councils and the communities they serve could be disastrous.”
Care workers, mostly relatively low paid women, are striking in Falkirk, West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire council

Albion suffered only their second Premier League defeat of the season at the Amex to a clinical Arsenal team who returned to the top of the table.

Roberto De Zerbi’s team competed well for long stages but they were punished ruthlessly when Tariq Lamptey’s foul in the box enabled Bukayo Saka to give Arsenal a 33rd-minute lead from the penalty spot. Then midway through the second half, just when Albion seemed to be getting on top, they gave the ball away carelessly and seconds later Kai Havertz had made it 2-0.

To rub salt into Albion wounds, their former player Leandro Trossard raced clear to score a third Arsenal goal in the closing stages. It had been a champion display by the visitors.

Arsenal should have scored in the first minute when Gabriel headed Martin Odegaard’s free kick wide from close range, but it wasn’t long before Albion got into their stride.

Julio Enciso and Jakub Moder were off target with shots before Simon Adingra cut inside Oleksandr Zinchenko but couldn’t test David Raya with a right-foot effort that was always drifting wide.

For once Albion weren’t able to dominate possession like they are used to do. Arsenal pressed high, although whenever Albion had the ball they funnelled every player behind it.
Gabriel Jesus became an increased threat down the left, forcing Bart Verbruggen to push his shot away at full stretch before heading wide after Kai Havertz found him in space.

And the Brazilian was involved when the deadlock was broken in the 33rd minute. Tariq Lamptey got a touch of the ball first as he made his challenge inside the box but then took his left leg away following through. Referee Brooks’ decision to award a penalty stood after a brief VAR check and Saka drilled it into the bottom corner.

Raya had little to do in the first half until the 44th minute but then he pulled off a brilliant save. Space opened up for Enciso to try and find the far corner from the D and it was curling inside the post until the Spaniard turned it round the post at full stretch.

Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp criticized Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates for going down too easily following a clash with Tottenham's James Maddison.

Many fans believe that Maddison was fortunate not to be sent off after he appeared to punch Yates.

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the first half, with Maddison making contact with Yates on the edge of the penalty area.

Yates, who fell to the floor, was subsequently seen complaining to referee Simon Hooper.

VAR assessed the incident but Maddison escaped punishment, with Hooper speaking to both players before the action got back underway.

Redknapp suggested Yates was to blame for the incident. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: 'It's not a lot. Yates is like that, he tries to get into players' faces, a bit like Gascoigne and Vinnie Jones many years ago.'

Keane, who previously worked with Yates at Forest, stated that the 26-year-old went down too easily.

Keane said: 'I worked with Yates at Forest, really nice kid, but every week somebody touches him he goes down. He goes down far too easily. For such a decent lad he needs to cut that out of his game.'

One Forest supporter was especially livid at the fact that Maddison wasn't dismissed.

They wrote: 'Can someone PLEASE tell me what on earth James Maddison is still doing on the pitch???? He has PUNCHED Yates???'.

Another user wrote: 'Maddison just allowed to punch Yates in the stomach?'.

In addition, another user stressed that Maddison should have been punished following a VAR check.

They wrote: 'How's VAR watching Maddison punch Yates and doing nothing ffs'.

There was further criticism of VAR, with one user writing: 'Maddison just punched Yates and VAR does nothing'.

The decision to not punish Maddison was also described as 'unbelievable', as one user wrote: 'James Maddison punching Ryan Yates in the stomach. VAR cleared it. Unbelievable.

Maddison remained on the pitch until he was substituted in the 76th minute.

Tottenham, who won 3-1 against Forest, took the lead through Murillo before the visitors equalized courtesy of Chris Wood.

Micky van de Ven restored Tottenham's lead before Pedro Porro made it 3-1.
